Blog 21: Mentorship

Literal
  • Done.
  • Jose Murillo. (909)622-2086. Brothers Precision.
Interpretive
What is the most important thing you gained from this experience? Why?
The most important thing that I gained through this whole experience is, resposibility. My mentor gave me deadlines and budgets when he gave me an assignment. I was able to be responsible enough turn in my work to him on that certain deadline and I managed to not go over the budget he set. He gave me work that is actually what an actual advertising manager does. My mentor put a lot of weight on my shoulders but I was able to pull it off, and because of him he taught me the true meaning of responsibility in the advertising industry.

Applied
How has what you’ve done helped you to answer your EQ? Please explain.
The work that my mentor assigned helped me answer my EQ because it was actual hands on work. I had to create business cards, pens, and ads for the company. Being able to save money for the company with all of the products I created was really difficult. But I saved money and with the ads and business cards and I was able to bring in profit for the company. All of the work and experience that I have done really helped me answer my EQ with full on depth.

Blog 20: Exit Interview

Content:

(1) What is your essential question and answers? What is your best answer and why?
My essential question is, what is the best way a company can increase profit through advertising? My three complete answers are, know the product in order to create the ideal media production, creating business cards and ads with the description or information of the company, and advertisements on public transit. My best answer is, creating business cards and ads for the company. The company is known to the clients around the machine shop industry because of the successful ads and business cards that have been created. This is my best answer because it has brought in more profit to my mentorship, Brothers Precision, and studies prove that the newspaper ad viewers and business card printing have increased from 43.3 million to 69.1 million since 2010.

(2) What process did you take to arrive at this answer?
When I first started my Independent Component, my mentor said that the company needs new business cards. So I proposed that for my IC1 I can help create the new business cards that the company needs. He agreed, and I first needed to design the template and color palette that the cards were going to have. Once I finished, I had to create a price list and I had to call many different printing companies that offered an inexpensive price, because my mentor gave me a $300 budget. Through many calls I finally found a printing company that offered 500 cards for $270. I later sent the completed design to the company. Interviewing my mentor and actually going through the whole process I finally came to conclusion that this will be my best answer.

(3) What problems did you face? How did you resolve them?
The problems that I faced was not being able to make a deal with a printing company because they charged a little too much and it didn't go with my budget. As well as finding a company open, because I go to mentorship on Saturday's and Sunday's and most aren't open on the weekends. But I kept insisiting, and on weekdays I would call when they were open and come up with the deal. Another problem was trying to come up with a template for the light-up pens and business cards with both my mentor and the workers. But I managed to convince them with my awesome skills in creating something appealing that they loved.

(4) What are the two most significant sources you used to answer your essential question and why?
Two of my most significant sources were my mentor, advertising manager for Brothers Precision, Jose Murillo, because he taught me a lot of hands on work, he was able to challenge me with actually creating advertisements for a company. There was a lot of responsibility on my shoulders but with the help of him I was able to do the responsibilities effectively. My second most significant source was a website called Inma. This website has many articles of real life working advertising managers and they talk about what ads they did and how has it helped their company. It also has articles that the revolution that advertising has had on them (author).

Blog 19: Independent Component 2

LITERAL:

(a) I, Gabriela Murillo, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.

(b) My sources were my mentor, Jose Murillo, and a book called "Hey Whipple, Squeeze This" by Luke Sullivan.

(c) Provided a digital spreadsheet (aka log of the 30 hours).

(d) What I completed over the course of two months was creating a new way to advertise for Brothers Precesion through light-up pens. I first had to order light- up pens (100 pens in total). I created a price list that Brothers Precision provides, then I called printing companies to determine and compare  which one would be affordable to us. Each pen would be $3 with the printed name of the company and everything. So the total cost was around $300 for a set of pens.

INTERPRETIVE:

This independent component helped me answer my EQ in a variety of ways. It taught me a new creative way to advertise for a company. So far, the clients that we've passed them out to really love them and that as an advertiser is an achievement. It also taught me how hard it is to make a business deal happen, there were many speed bumps throughout the way, with the printing and pen companies but I was able to deal with it and make a deal concrete like a "professional." The experience was challenging but yet fun, and through the stressful times my mentor helped me focus to through the difficult situations.

My mentor gave me an assignment to find an affordable new way to advertise the company. And I did my research and suggested new business cards that has the basic information of the company printed. So far we are waiting for the budget to be at a perfect mark then we will pay the money orders. Advisory Meeting #2

EQ: What is the best way a company can increase profit through advertising?

Increasing profit for your company is one of the hardest things but advertising makes it more helpful and another way in increasing profit is creating business cards and ads with the description or information of the company.

3 details to support the answer (a detail is a fact and an example)
  • A company has to get their name known in one way or another, and a business card will provide the companys information. Ex: Company name & number, where they are located, and a little description of they do.
  • Once you've passed out the business card maybe you shall provide an ad of a deal that your company has of any product, so your client can get the overall understanding of what your company provides. Ex: Title of company, picture of the product, despcription, and/or the deal that your company has.
  •  These two things will make your company known for what you do and most likely attract new clients to help increase the profit. Ex: My mentor has really been benefited by these two hings a lot as well as his company.
The research source (s) to support your details and answer
"Inma" and my mentor helped me create this answer because of actual experiences that have happened. Inma is a website that are written by advertisers starting their own company and how ads has helped them be known worldwide. And I pesonally get to see in an everyay basis the development of my mentors' company.

Blog 9: EQ

1. I reviewed the rule of three for writing an EQ.
2.
 a.  What is the most important factor in healthy weight loss?
This EQ doesn't really provide a  stance, meaning that the answer is either going to be a fact from any organization or website. This EQ won't build a strong foundation with it being as simple as it is now, which can be improved.

 b.  What is most important to securing a conviction in a criminal investigation?
The EQ is sort of confusing and is not that specific as it can be, the format of the EQ can be written in a different way so it can all make sense. Doesn't really encourage depth and rigor on the topic.

c.  What is most important in creating a hairstyle that best satisfies a customer?
The format is not clear at all the wording does not really make sense. You can't really argue anything, the answer can even be a personal opinion, doesn't take a stance. Nor does it provide any kind of framework.

d.  How can an Anesthesiologist best treat chronic pain?
This EQ has two of the criterias except for one which is, take a stance it won't let you argue a certain point that it might have. And the answer might just be a list or facts of a recitation, which doesn't create depth in any sort of way.
Current EQ: What skill is most important to success as an advertising manager?
Possible draft: How must an advertising manager be successful in the public relations market?
I personally like my first one better because it has helped me a lot with my research to try and provide the exact answer, which has been a challenge.
